What should I replace my S Drive with? S6, S8 or S3

Note the S drives are no longer repairable. We recommend the ZETA family of microstepping drives to replace the obsolete S family of microstepping drives. Conversion details are listed below.

S3-Drive can be replaced by the ZETA4 or E-AC drive.

S6-Drive can be replaced by the ZETA4 Drive, E-AC or the ZETA8 Drive depending on the actual current levels being used. Check your S Drive DIP switch settings to determine the current level being used. Below is a chart listing the current levels for the S motors, commonly used with the S/SX.

The ZETA4 is rated up to 4 Amps while the ZETA8 is rated up to 8 Amps. The E-AC is rated up to 3.5 Amps. The S6 was rated up to 6 Amps.

S8-Drive can be replaced by the ZETA8 Drive.

S series Systems

S drives were also sold with S motors as systems. Example, S57-51 included a S6 drive and a S57-51 motor. The S motors are still available with -MO (motor only) designator. Example:  S57-51-MO    The motors in these systems were always in series. However, the customer could change the wiring and dipswitches. In that case, ZETA8 may be needed instead of the ZETA4 or E-AC.

Dimensions

The ZETA4 is shorter and shallower (depth) and thinner than the S3, S6, or S8 drives were. The mounting foot print is thus also different (smaller). Refer to the user documentation for exact dimensions.

The ZETA8 is roughly the same height and depth as the S3, S6, or S8 drives were. The width is much less than the S8 Drive or the S6 Drive w/ optional fan kit installed was. The mounting footprint is different than the S Drives so that will need to be adjusted for.

Note - The ZETA family does not provide for the 'side-mount' option that the S family allowed by relocating the S Drive mounting tabs. The ZETA family mounting tabs are not relocatable so cabinet depth could be an issue if the 'side-mount' option was used with your S Drive.

Connections

The indexer connections are the same on the S Drive as on the ZETA and E-AC drives. They each use a 25 pin D Sub style connector and the same pin-out for the basic control signals.

Note - The S Drive also had a 'Zero Phase' input available on its indexer connector. The ZETA Drives do not provide a 'Zero Phase' input. Rather these same pins provide a 'Reset' input instead. Standard Parker (Compumoor) cables and indexers did not make use of either of these input features.

The ZETA4 has the same motor connector as the S3 and S6 drives had, a 9 pin screw terminal. Your existing motor cable/connector can be re-used as is.

The ZETA8 has the same motor connector as the S8 drives had, a 7 pin screw terminal. Your existing motor cable/connector can be re-used as is.

Note - S8 Drives built prior to Nov 6, 1995 used the smaller gauge 9 pin screw terminal but was changed to the larger gauge 7 pin screw terminal after this date. If your S8 uses the 9 pin connector then you will need to re-wire the motor cable to the ZETA8 larger 7 pin connector as shown in the ZETA user guides.

Power

The ZETA4 and ZETA8 drive operate from the same 120VAC input supply as the S3, S6, or S8 would have used.

The E-AC uses screw terminals for the 120VAC input.

Settings

The ZETA family is configured via DIP switch settings in a similar fashion to the S family drives were. There is not a one-to-one correlation in settings so you will need to compare the existing S Drive DIP settings and transfer those to the corresponding ZETA DIP settings.

The E-AC uses microswtiches internal to set the current level. Remove the cover to set before connecting motor.

Motors

The S57 (Nema 23) and S83 (Nema 34) frame step motors are the exact same motors as the ZETA57 and ZETA83 frame motors, simply re-released under the ZETA family name. The S106 (Nema 42) frame motors were not carried to the ZETA family but are compatible with the ZETA8 drives. Check the existing S Drive DIP settings and transfer to the corresponding ZETA DIP settings.

These motors are also the same as the ES series step motors, however with those, no connector is provided at the end of the cable (as these are provided with the drives).
